IMPORTANTFEATURES OF ELIZABETHAN AGE

The Elizabethan Era occurred from 1558 to1603. It was claimed by many historians as the golden age in EnglishHistory. During this era, England experienced tumultuous upsurge in peaceand prosperity while the arts flourished. The time period is named afterQueen Elizabeth I who reigned England through this time.

The most importantcharacteristic of the Elizabethan age was the virtual religious tolerance andsocial contentment, intellectual liberty, unrestrained patriotism and tranquillityacross the borders. The age appealed to the imagination and intellect, andliterature intuitively turned to the drama and brought it rapidly to thehighest stage of its development. It is an age of dreams of adventure and a newinsights for freedom of mind, which provided impetus to the great literarystimulus.

The background of the Elizabethan socio-politicallife includes two great movements namely “theReformation” and “the Renaissance”.
